Choristers up close - John Williams

How did you come to join Risca Male Choir?
I have been a friend of 2nd tenor, Phil Sargeant for many years, and I was aware that he was a member of Risca Male Choir. When I retired from work, I became interested in becoming a member also. Phil offered to introduce me to the choir. And I’m very happy and proud to now be a member of such a distinguished male choir, and I look forward to many more years of being involved.
We realise you’ve only been with the choir for a very short time, but what are the elements you have most enjoyed so far?
I find choir practices very therapeutic; having to concentrate for four hours every week on issues not concerned with everyday life, helps.
I enjoy the camaraderie of other choir members, and the feeling of being part of a team I really enjoy. I get a feeling of a sense of responsibility, not wanting to let fellow choristers down is important to me.
The overall respect for each other displayed by all sections of the choir makes for a feeling of family which I find most pleasant.
What music do you particularly enjoy singing and why?
I have very much enjoyed my time with RMC and I believe the choir has a very special sound. Pieces I particularly enjoy include Anfonaf Angel with its amazing mix of tones of which I feel very proud! Then there’s We’ll keep a welcome in the hillside, and Calon Lân, items that never cease to make me feel proud to be Welsh! And finally, more Welsh music with Hiraeth and Lisa Lân are firm favourites of mine.
What do you think you might look forward to in the future, perhaps having heard from longer serving choristers of memorable moments in the past?
Since joining the choir, I have looked forward to travelling on a concert tour, as other members have told stories of concerts performed in many amazing venues. I look forward to such visits.
Tell us briefly about your life outside of choir
I have retired now, but was involved in the distribution of steel by road haulage, and was CEO of my company for 38 years!
I have been married to Gaynor for 48 years and have three grown children and eight grandchildren. My wife and I have recently sold the house we spent the last thirty years in and have downsized. We are very happy with our new home.
Historically, my hobbies have been horse riding and golf. I still enjoy both, but age catches up and now they have become spectator sports for me!
A final thought, if you have one
I look forward with great pleasure to a long and happy time with Risca Male Choir.
