How did you come to join Risca Male Choir?
I have always enjoyed the music of Male Choirs. I joined Mynyddislwyn Male Voice Choir in 1975 and enjoyed many years singing with them. I was also a member of Cor Meibion De Cymru between 1982 and 2005. I knew about Risca Male Choir and was aware that they were a professional, well-respected choir, and I decided to apply. I was invited along to find out more about the choir and to hear them sing. I decided to join, I was fortunate to pass the voice test. The rest, as they say, is history.
How long have you been with our choir, and what are the things which have helped you stay?
I have been with the choir since 2002, so for almost twenty years. I enjoy being part of a professional, top quality choir. I thoroughly enjoy the range of music that the choir sings. But perhaps my strongest reason for staying is the friendships that I have been fortunate to make along the way, and the occasional pint after rehearsals!
What music do you particularly enjoy singing and why?
I mostly enjoy some of the modern music, particularly the songs from the musicals and movies. Some of the songs I most enjoy are Goin’up a yonder, (A spiritual that we adapted from a copy given to us by members of the Ohio State Youth Choir when they visited us some years ago). Prayer of the Children, (A most moving composition thinking of children caught up in conflict. It was an item we sung in Auschwitz) and Nella Fantasia. (A vocal version of the wonderful melody, Gabriel’s Oboe, written by Ennio Morricone for the film The Mission)
Have you had any memorable musical moments that gave you pride and satisfaction?
I always enjoy performing with the Choir, particularly at venues such as the Celtic Manor and in competitions. My proudest moment was when the choir sang at my daughter’s wedding a few years ago - it made a lovely day even more special!
Tell us briefly about your life outside of choir.
I have been married to Marian for 59 years. We have three children, five grandchildren and a great grandchild on the way. I really enjoy spending time with the dogs belonging to the family - Max, Whiskey and Murphy are regular visitors to our house!
A final thought, if you have one
After a difficult period during the pandemic, I am so pleased that we are now able to hold rehearsals in Choir HQ - I hope it stays that way. I would strongly encourage anyone who is considering joining to do so - there aren’t many better ways to spend your time.
